Ford Ecosport Overview
The Ford Ecosport had been revived in 2016. There were some additional features, more power on offer. There had been a change in the price as well. The Ford Ecosport now has got a new touchscreen and a new variant called Ecosport Platinum Edition. This is the new top-of-the-line variant.
The new touchscreen will be an 8-inch one. The interface will offer Navigation, DVD video player, reverse camera and also exact door open warning. Ford will be deleting a few features across the range. The Trend variants will not have such as reclining rear seats, rear defogger, rear wash & wipe, vanity lamp, driver seat height adjust, 60:40 split for rear seats, and the seat storage box. The Trend+ variant will get black plastic roof rails instead of silver ones. the Platinum variant gets additional features like 17-inch alloy wheels, maps, reverse parking camera, cruise control, front and rear bumper appliques and dual tone paint scheme with a blacked-out roof. Ford Ecosport Exterior & Style
While this, technically, is a mid-life facelift for the EcoSport, we have surprisingly little to write about, in this section of the review. The narrow slat that used to lie just under the bonnet has been deleted and the grill now moves higher up on the face of the EcoSport. The Ford logo now moves from the missing slat to the centre of the grill, like in the Endeavour and other Ford family cars of this generation. The headlamps are larger and the round fog lamps below have been replaced by much larger triangular units. The bottom splitter has also received a mild redesign and the top-of-the-line Titanium Plus model receives 17-inch alloys. And that is essentially it; the sides and the rear of the EcoSport remain the same. That said, the EcoSport was always pleasant to look at and we can’t fault Ford for not messing with a design that already works well.
Ford Ecosport Interior & Space
Now, this is where the EcoSport felt dated and Ford has addressed this issue. The dashboard layout is entirely new and so are the steering wheel, aircon vents and the instrument console with the multi-information display. The centre console and the door pads get orange finishing that breathes freshness into the cabin. There is an 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on offer. The new touchscreen is super responsive and also feels very smooth to use. The steering wheel houses controls for the infotainment system and cruise control etc. The quality of materials used inside the cabin is just impeccable. The EcoSport gets all-new seats at the front and these are far more comfortable and supportive. The cushioning has been made softer too. At the rear, space is still limited and it is a difficult task to make 3 people sit. Knee room is less while head room is good and shoulder space is good enough too if only two passengers are sitting. However, the rear seat is still very comfortable and provides good support to the body.
Ford Ecosport Engine & Performance
Moving on to the new Ford EcoSport’s engine options, the carmaker continues to offer the compact SUV with a choice of 3 options: the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol, and the 1.5-litre Ti-VCT petrol. While the performance numbers of the petrol motors are the same, the diesel engine has been re-tuned to deliver improved and minimizing turbo lag. As far as Ford EcoSport transmission options go, a 5-speed manual is the standard provision with the option of a 6-speed PowerShift automatic transmission albeit only with the 1.5-litre Ti-VCT petrol.
Ford seems to have used a bit more insulation because the engine noise is well damped at idle, and it remains smooth when accelerating, only getting intrusive at high revs. It’s not a drastic change, but refinement levels are noticeably better than before. The engine delivers very linear acceleration and it’s now even more responsive. The big difference is felt in the way the car picks up speed from low revs and delivers good performance throughout the rev band. You can keep it one gear higher and stay in third gear in traffic for a longer time. The car also feels quicker.
The Ford Ecosport has a 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine which is the most powerful option. This engine churns about 125bhp of power. Comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission that is easy to shift. The throws are short and are well spaced. In terms of performance, this is our pick, especially for those who give high importance to it. For those who need better performance, this is the ideal pick. Driving in city with this engine is a breeze. There is more than sufficient power in this mill. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is for those who need a regular petrol SUV with normal performance.
Ford Ecosport Driving Dynamics
The Ford EcoSport has always had a fun-to-drive nature and the new car doesn’t miss out on the fun factor. The steering continues to feel light enough at city speeds while it weighs up nicely on the highways. It also offers a good amount of feedback. The suspension has been softened a bit which makes the ride a lot more better, though it is still a bit on the stiffer side. The new low-profile tyres on the top variants also add to the stiff ride while lower variants with higher profile tyres may make the ride feel a bit more softer. Grip from the new tyres is very good and braking performance on the EcoSport is also well-suited to the weight and size of the car.
Ford Ecosport Braking & Safety
This is an aspect where the EcoSport scores well. Dual airbags and ABS with EBD come as standard across the range. You also get speed sensing auto door locks and the top end variant gets 6 airbags. Ford also offers the emergency assist feature, which automatically calls up the emergency services in the event of an accident. The automatic gets added tech like EBA, ESC, traction control and hill-launch assist.

Ford Ecosport Conclusion
Even though this is just a mid-life facelift, Ford has made a lot of major changes and thus the EcoSport comes out as an extremely good offering in the compact SUV segment. In fact, it is one of the strongest contenders in this segment now. With low running costs (on diesel engine) and lower service costs that Ford is aiming for, the EcoSport won’t burn a hole in your pocket over the long term. For those who want something other than the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Tata Nexon, we definitely recommend the Ford EcoSport to you.
